The Great Fire of London

  • With the aid of Samuel Pepys Diary we are transported back to 1666.
  • Relive the days of the Great Fire of London and experience life in the crowded streets of London.
  • Learn why the fire spread so quickly and how London was re-built.

Florence & Mary

  • This workshop focuses on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole; two nurses during the Crimean War.
  • The life of a working-woman in the 1800s was a difficult one, but these two women had one mission - to improve the lives of sick and injured patients.
  • Workshop length: 1 hour.

Florence Nightingale came from a privileged background.

  • Florence Nightingale had a vision to become a nurse during the Victoria Period. Learn why it was a so difficult for Florence, due to the constraints of her social standing.
  • Mr Herbert, The Minister of War and a personal friend of Florence instigated her departure with 38 nurses to Scutari to improve conditions at the hospital there.
  • Florence's trip to Scutari was given the royal seal of approval.
  • Florence was a great statistician and brought about change to the medical profession by proving her theories, with her Polar Chart.

Mary Seacole was educated in Jamaica.

  • Mary Seacole became a doctress and learned about herbal medicines and nursing skills whilst helping at her mother’s boarding house.
  • Mary treated wounded soldiers and patients suffering from war injuries and tropical diseases.
  • Mary was a successful business-woman, who enjoyed travelling to other countries, as she never let prejudice stand in her way.
  • She was keen to learn from the medical profession as well as impart her knowledge on to them.
  • Mary did not have the royal seal of approval to go to the Crimean War, and so had to pay for her own passage and finance her time in Balaclava.

The Norman Invasion

  • After a triple battle between, Harold Godwinson, William of Normandy and Harald Hardrada, we find out which one of them is going to rule England.
  • Children participate by dressing up and becoming different characters, with lots of controlled sword play.
  • Workshop length: 1 hour

  • We finish our battle at Hastings to see William crowned as King, with Queen Matilda by his side.

  • In order to protect England from any other invaders, the villages are instructed to build a Motte and Bailey Castle.

  • We learn how they managed to build so many castles in a short space of time.

  • Farming methods were very important to the survival of the community and we take a look at how the feudal system worked from the King down to the peasants.


 

Castles, Knights & Dragons

  • Visit Lord and Lady Bath’s castle and experience the daily life of all the inhabitants of the castle.
  • Attend Knight School and learn how to weald a sword.
  • Follow the social ladder from a page, to a squire, to become a fully-fledged Knight
  • Workshop length: 1 hour.
